The Baltimore Orioles moved back into sole possession of first place in the American League East with a strong start to their 10-game road trip and have won five of seven.

The Orioles will head further west when they visit the Oakland Athletics in the opener of a four-game series on Monday.

Manny Machado became the second player in history to homer in each of the first three innings when Baltimore dominated the rubber match with a 10-2 win at the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Machado drove in a career-high seven runs in the win and finished up the weekend 7-for-15 with nine RBIs and five runs scored to lead the Orioles offense.

The Athletics are stumbling along in last place in the AL West and totaled three runs while being swept at home in a three-game series by the Chicago Cubs over the weekend. Oakland has dropped eight of its last nine games and lost its ace on Sunday when right-hander Sonny Gray was placed on the disabled list with a forearm strain.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (3-8, 4.08 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (7-7, 4.46)

Gausman bounced back from a terrible start in a loss at Toronto on July 29 by holding Texas to two runs in seven innings while striking out seven in a win on Wednesday. The LSU product yielded one home run in that win and has had some trouble keeping the ball in the park with 20 homers allowed in 110 1/3 total innings. Gausman is still looking for his first road win of 2016 and is 0-7 with a 5.62 ERA in 11 starts away from home.

Graveman had a string of five straight quality starts come to an end when he was knocked around for six runs on nine hits - two homers - in four innings at the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The 25-year-old escaped without a decision in that contest but suffered the loss at Cleveland on July 29 - his first since May 19. Graveman has never had much success against the Orioles and was ripped for six runs on five hits - four home runs - in 2 2/3 innings at Baltimore on May 8.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles OF Steve Pearce (right elbow strain) left Sunday's game and is day-to-day.

2. Oakland 3B Danny Valencia went 0-for-10 with three strikeouts over the weekend.

3. Baltimore LF Hyun Soo Kim scored at least one run in each of his last four starts.

Three of Gausman's last four starts have been sub-4/6+ and has been going pretty well lately, but that ugly three inning six run performance against Toronto in the middle blemishes it a bit. He still finished July with a 4.88 ERA which is the highest of any month to this point, but he is off to a good start in August. The guy just can't keep his ERA under four this season due to inconsistency issues and he is still pretty much a two pitch pitcher (fastball/change up) that probably uses his fastball too much. Unfortunately for Gausman, he has the same dilemna as his opponent Kendall Graveman that being extreme home/away splits only it works in Graveman's favor. Gausman on the other hand is facing bad odds. He is a perfect 0-7 on the road with bad numbers otherwise. Gausman's four best starts of the season were all at Camden Yards and three were shutouts with all being at least seven innings. He has not fared well at all in two starts against Oakland and the one start at the Coliseum was awful. He still needs to find a way to deal with righties as they continue to demolish Gausman.

Graveman had a decent April (4.03) and June (4.33) and followed that up with an outstanding July (2.68), but has not got off on the right foot so far in August. He allowed six runs on nine hits (2HR) and a walk in four innings against the pesky Angels. Graveman has horrendous home/away splits with his best being at home fortunately for him. He also has atrocious numbers against the Orioles especially at Camden Yards where those numbers are far worse, so Graveman is put into the best possible circumstances to give him the best odds of pitching well here against the Orioles. He was slaughtered back on May 8th when he allowed six runs (4HR) on five hits and three walks in 2.2 innings at Camden Yards in an 11-3 massacre.

The Orioles dealt James Shields a standing death out on the mound yesterday needing only four outs to score eight runs on only six hits with four of those hits being home runs. I think this is probably more due to Shields being terrible than it is the Orioles offense waking up. He was just that awful which is unknown territory for Shields as he has never been this bad. His worst season before 2016 was way back in 2010 where he threw 203.1 innings to a 5.18 (1.46/.294) with 34 home runs allowed in 34 appearances. This season in 128 innings, Shields has pitched to a 6.68 ERA with 24 home runs allowed in 22 starts and is crusing for some career bests he probably doesn't want to reach. It looks like he will have to reinvent himself to some degree if he wants to be consistently good like he has been for most of his career. He's only 34 it's not like the guy is old yet and he never relied on velocity more than he did command. Anyway, the Orioles now go to Oakland to face them for the second time this season in the midst of playing horrible baseball. This road trip could turn out ok after all for the Orioles, but teams in slumps always eventually come out of it and losing eight of nine is a pretty deep funk.

Graveman probably gets the slight edge here just because the dramatic home/away splits these two have fall in Graveman's favor. Neither have pitched well against their opponents though Graveman is far worse, but pitches way better at the Coliseum generally this season. Gausman is coming off a good start and Graveman a bad one, but both have generally been pitching well lately.

With Toronto's loss, the Orioles regain sole possession of first place by a game and, of course, Boston loses their second in a row to drop back to three again and also drop out of the second WC spot as Detroit now has sole possesion of it and sit two back of Cleveland in the division. Texas took two from Houston after dropping the first game and dropping the Astros to third in the division as Seattle has won three in a row and are 3.5 back of the WC with Houston four back. Houston will face those pesky Twins next, Seattle plays Detroit as they will look to get closer to the WC and Texas heads to Colorado. Meanwhile, Toronto plays the Rays and Boston against the Yankees who are still somehow only five back of the WC and one game above .500.

So, did yesterday's HR and reaching base 4 times mean that Chris Davis is out of his slump?

    • Back to Nick, he’s one of my 5-6 favorite Orioles of all time, even though you wouldn’t put him in the 5-6 best.  Just tremendously steady and reliable.  And, he came along during a really dark period for the Orioles as well as their minor league system.  I used to refer to him as “the Boy Who Lived” because he was the only decent player our farm system produced over a 7-8 year period. I’ll never forget that shot of him on the field after the O’s clinched the AL East, taking in the scene with a tear in his eye.  That’s more memorable to me than any of the great things he did on the field.   I will make every effort to be at his induction ceremony, even though I know his acceptance speech is likely to be forgettable.  Because I’ll never forget his importance to the franchise.
    • Honestly, if you are asking me what I would do. I play Mateo more right now because he is outperforming Urias. I would also, give Mayo some time in RF at AAA. And I would leave Holliday down at AAA as well. I wouldn't feel rushed to make a move right now and I would probably reevaluate things some time in June. I would not recall Holliday until he has had at least 60 days (2 months time at AAA) and he would have to be mashing at that time and shown that he has worked on the things that they have asked him.  I would not bring up Mayo until he has had adequate time to adjust to the OF. To answer your question, I would not bring up Mayo to play 3B. It creates an unnecessary problem for you both now and later. If the O's are not planning to trade Mayo (which I hope they don't), the most likely scenario is that he is going to move out of the infield because his defense is not good enough. Lastly, if by June/ early July Santander hasn't picked it up, then I would give Mayo or Kjerstad a serious look in RF. The reason that I say RF for Mayo is that he has a very strong arm and pretty decent mobility for a guy his size, but I don't think that the glove is good enough for the INF at a high level in the Major Leagues. I also, wouldn't expect Mayo/Holliday/Cowser/Kjerstad to put up an .800+ OPS in their first go round in the Major Leagues. I don't think that is a realistic expectation at all for a guy making the jump for the first time.
    • Many of Tiger’s injuries were due to circumstances fully within his control.   Just sayin’.
    • I think it is as simple as that they believe until Holliday gets sorted out and returns, his bat on the bench and as a part-time starter makes them a bit better team than their other roster alternatives. Given that you have Santander in the last year of his deal and Mullins and Hays in their last two seasons, you don't really have the long-term outfield depth that would tempt you to move him for a short-term bullpen fix. He likely goes back to Norfolk when Holliday comes up, depending on injuries, if Cowser hits a major slump, how he plays in the part-time role, etc, etc, but they are willing to sacrifice some of his AAA playing time and development to be better in the short term. I don't have a problem with that.
    • Now we’re on to Mateo.  Nope.  My turn to ask the question.   If Mayo comes up and is average defensively at 3B and puts up an .800+ OPS at 3B and Westburg continues to hit and plays 2B what do you do with Holliday short term and long term? ”Last scenario, if he does great on both sides of the ball, what do you do with Holliday for the rest of this season and long term?”
    • No, I don't have Holliday penciled into the HOF. I never said that. What I said is that I believe in his talent. I don't think that many people got it wrong in his evaluation.  I also don't believe that Mayo's defense is anywhere close to good enough to be an All-star caliber 3B. But I do believe that is possible (maybe even very for Westburg). I'm not sure that professional sports is a meritocracy. In that the more talent/ability that you have, the more opportunities that you will get. That probably explains why Holliday got the first crack at the Bigs over Norby (and even Mayo to a degree).  Last thing, right now Mateo is performing best at the other INF spot (second best). Do you want him to stay/get more playing time right now?
    • They will be cautious with Holliday now.  I am sure they would hate to have to send him down a second time.  I'm thinking mid-season for Holliday if all goes well in Norfolk.  If he struggles down there, which isn't out of the realm of possibility, it could be delayed further.  Mayo is destroying the ball and should get the call next.  There is a spot for him at third with Westburg moving to second.
